An important announcement from our director

Posted on January 16th, 2018 by Charles Grey

ok.

In being proactive and playing our part in saving water, PSFA has decided to change to a non-cooking menu for six months, starting Monday 22 January 2018. This change will also ensure that there will be no stockpiling at schools where cooking can be interrupted due to no water. We will still ensure that the learners will continue receiving two meals a day, a cooked breakfast in the morning and a sandwich with a variety of spreads for lunch. We have ensured that the spreads we provide will still address the nutritional needs of our learners and that the vital breakfast meal is still in place to kick-start their day. Our aim is to make certain that children continue to be fed daily during this water crisis. We hope that this decision to change our menu meets with your approval. We will review it on a continuous basis. Kind regards PETRINA PAKOE DIRECTOR PSFA – doing our bit to save water! PSFA – adding our drop to the bucket to reserve water!

A group of friends to run 100km to raise funds to feed hungry school children

Posted on November 10th, 2017 by Charles Grey

UTCT 2017- 100km, 65km, 35km race on Saturday 2 December 2017, to raise funds to feed underprivileged school children. J-FRED’s fundraising target for this project is R54 000, which will enable PSFA to provide all the learners on our feeding programme at Mandalay Primary School with daily meals while at school. The members of J-FRED hereby appeal to you to please support their campaign by making a donation in any amount to PSFA. This can be done securely on our website www.psfa.org.za.dedi817.jnb1.host-h.net, post us a cheque with a cover letter or make an EFT payment into our bank account. Please use the reference ‘J-FRED’. 100% of all donations made in support of this amazing campaign will go towards feeding these children.

Julius Oosthuizen says “J-FRED’s first big event was the Ultra Trail Cape Town race in 2016”, where a few of us ran the 65km event and the majority of the group ran the 35km. This year two of us have graduated to the 100km at UTCT, we have one member who is taking on the 65km for the first time and we’ll all be out in force in the 35km as well”. “Before the 2016 event we decided as a group to support a charity while taking part in UTCT,” says Julius. “We chose the Shine Literacy Campaign, where a number of us are involved as volunteers as well, and managed to raise just over R25 000. This year we decided to select PSFA as our charity of choice because as runners, we know how important good nutrition is, and the thought of being able to help needy children through a school day, makes our participation in UCTC that much more meaningful.” About UTCT UTCT is part of the international Ultra Trail series of races, which are known for being extremely challenging and technical. The 100km event involves more than 4,000m of vertical ascent, which is the equivalent of climbing Table Mountain four times, and includes varied terrain like rocky paths, forest trails and sand. Visit www.ultratrailcapetown.com/100km for more information. About J-FRED J-FRED is an informal trail running group consisting of nine people which was formed in 2016. All of the members are close friends, and the idea behind the group is to encourage each other to keep training consistently and push their trail-running boundaries. The group tries to meet for a regular long run on the weekends, and then also to do some stair / climbing work on Table Mountain mid-week. J-FRED does not have any formal websites or Facebook pages, but if you would like to support the campaign you can email Julius directly (julius.oosthuizen@gmail.com), and he will provide you with more details. Golden Key Society UCT 2017 raises and donates R16 150 to feed learners at Surrey Primary

Posted on November 8th, 2017 by Charles Grey

Surrey Primary School, Emma Sham, fundraising director of the Golden Key International Honours Society, UCT Chapter, presented our fundraising manager, Charles Grey with cheque in the amount of R16 150. This amount which will enable PSFA to provide a class of 36 underprivileged learners at this school with nutritious daily meals for an entire year, was raised by the members of Golden Key UCT who organised the following fundraising events on our behalf during 2017:

  1. Eat a Burger Feed a Child at the Golden Arrow Spur in Newlands on April 4. The members of the Golden Key Society UCT worked as waitrons. This Spur donated 10% of its evening’s turnover and R1 800 was raised.
  2. Pub Quiz for UCT students on June 8 – this was an extremely well-supported event raising R3 200.
  3. Concert at Trenchtown in Observatory on September 22 – this was the biggest event for the year featuring two bands, Dom Chaung and Mobbing Bali as well as a soloist, Cuan Robertson, who all kindly performed for free – thank you! The concert raised a whopping R4 000 from door takings.
  4. Proceeds from the sale of Golden Key Society branded hoodies – the members have been selling these popular hoodies throughout the year and managed to raise a fantastic R7 150.
A big thank you to the Golden Key Society UCT for your support! The Element of Surprise: Ipsos Foundation provides funding to feed 1 155 hungry children

Posted on November 3rd, 2017 by Charles Grey

  • Gateway Primary – 770 learners
  • Abedare Primary – 385 learners
  • The reason that the Ipsos Foundation selected these schools, is due to the fact that the township of Delft is an extremely poor and poverty stricken area in the Western Cape, that is plagued with domestic violence and drug abuse. Gillian Drewett said “As a team of researchers who spend most of our day in focused concentration, thinking and learning, we are fully aware of the evidence that shows concentration and the ability to learn are negatively impacted when a learner is hungry. With this grant from the Ipsos Foundation and the work of the PFSA, we at Ipsos Laboratories have been empowered to make a difference in the lives of these learners with two meals a day throughout an entire school year. What a privilege!” She went on to say, “The statement ‘You cannot teach a hungry child’ sums up the inspiring work done by the PSFA. For the Ipsos Foundation and Ipsos Laboratories more specifically; to be able to make a small but tangible difference in this way is hugely humbling for all of us at Ipsos Laboratories”. We recently took Gillian and Kathrine to visit Gateway and Abedare Primary Schools where they had the opportunity to experience our feeding programme in action, serve meals and to interact with the children. A big thank you to the Ipsos Foundation – we really appreciate your support!
