The Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) is delighted to announce that after a two-year postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we, in association with Lucky Star, will be hosting our popular fundraising event, the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk on Sunday 28 August 2022.
The event, which will start at Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Green Point and end at Green Point Cricket Club, will include two routes along the Sea Point Promenade, a 10km walk that will start at 7:45 am and a 5km walk that will start at 8 am. Every person who enters will receive a medal and refreshments sponsored by Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages.
We call on everyone to join us in the fight against childhood hunger by entering this special fun family event at the cost of only R100 per person. Each entry fee will enable PSFA to provide 33 schoolchildren affected by poverty with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch for an entire day!

“Although this year’s Blisters for Bread has been scaled down in size due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we felt that it would be important to host the event this year to keep our 54-year-old Blisters for Bread brand alive in the hearts and minds of our supporters,” says Petrina Pakoe, director of PSFA. “This event provides us with a platform to raise funds to feed impoverished schoolchildren and to create awareness of childhood hunger.”

We are thrilled to announce that, as part of its ongoing commitment to fighting childhood hunger, KFC Add Hope recently awarded a R1.5 million donation to PSFA for school feeding.
This generous donation will enable PSFA to serve an outstanding total of 905 400 meals to 3 030 learners on our feeding programme attending the following nine schools in the Western Cape for a calendar year:
1. Blue Downs Primary
2. Buck Road Primary in Lotus River
3. False Bay Primary in Macassar
4. Gateway Primary in Delft
5. HJ Kroneberg Primary in Kensington
6. St Michael’s Primary in Khayelitsha
7. Wellington Primary
8. Summerdale High (ex Aloe Junior High) in Mitchells Plain
9. Oval North High School in Beacon Valley
Andra Nel, Brand Purpose and Reputation Manager at KFC stated, “One of Add Hope’s strengths has always been our partnership approach. We see this come to life daily when we partner with our customers who donate their R2 and also with our non-profit partners who bring the feeding programme to life at the coal face. We have been so humbled by the incredible work that PSFA has done to relieve hunger for more than 60 years. The R1.5 million donation from KFC Add Hope will see more children being reached and help us extend our support across nine schools in the Western Cape.”
Nel explains that Add Hope remains committed to helping as many children as possible obtain access to the nutrition they need to learn, to grow and to thrive.
“The sad reality is that many children in the Western Cape arrive at school daily with an empty stomach. We know that a hungry child is one that would not be able to realise his or her potential and this is why we are committed to ensuring that South Africa’s less privileged children receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch at school every day to enable them to learn and function well, and empower them to reach their full potential,” says Nel.
Petrina Pakoe, director of PSFA, says, “After undergoing an intensive due diligence analysis, the Peninsula School Feeding Association was delighted when we received the news from KFC Add Hope that our application for funding was successful. 100% of this generous donation will be allocated to providing schoolchildren affected by poverty with cooked nutritious meals, daily. We want to thank KFC Add Hope for the financial support and sincerely look forward to working alongside this amazing company in the fight against childhood hunger.”
We recently took representatives from KFC Add Hope to St Michael’s Primary School in Khayelitsha to experience our feeding programme in action. This school is one of the nine schools adopted by KFC Add Hope. On February 7th, PSFA’s new donor
ZEMP Leathers addressed 600 grade eight and nine students at
Summerdale High School in Mitchell’s Plain (ex Aloe Junior High), a school on our feeding programme, to introduce an exciting design initiative.
With the guidance of the Zemp team and that of Summerdale High’s art department, the grade eight students were asked to submit their creative art designs. The winning design will be printed onto Zemp Leathers organic cotton lining to be incorporated into a limited-edition range of bags. The grade nine students were given the exciting task of designing their dream bag – the winning bag design will be created and added to Zemp’s collection.

Thanks to a generous donation made by The MacFarlane Family Foundation, PSFA was able to present St Michael’s Primary in Khayelitsha, with a new kitchen at a special ceremony held at the school today. This is the 128th kitchen that PSFA has handed over to a school in its 64 years of existence.
After our director, Petrina Pakoe cut the ceremonial ribbon at the entrance to the kitchen and handed over the keys to Benedicta Ngalwa, the Principal of St Michael’s Primary, the Bishop of the
Anglican Church Of Southern Africa Diocese Of False Bay, Right Reverend Margaret Vertue and her fellow clergymen, blessed the kitchen – this was a very special moment.
After the blessing, the St Michael’s Primary School choir sang a selection of beautiful songs of celebration and gratitude.
St Michael’s Primary is a private school that is owned by the Anglican Church. The school joined PSFA’s feeding programme in May 2012. PSFA provides 350 learners at this school with daily breakfasts and lunches.

In honour of PSFA’s annual fundraising event, Blisters for Bread which we have had to sadly cancel for the past two years because of this awful COVID-19 pandemic, we extended an invitation to all the schools on our feeding programme to organise a special fundraising activity for PSFA. To encourage the schools to participate in this campaign, we offered a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize for the schools that raised and donated the most money.
- Winner – Helderkruin Primary School for raising R6 915. The school received a Dell desktop computer loaded with Windows 10 and a 22 inch Samsung screen kindly sponsored by CrewTech.
- 2nd place – Forest Village Leadership Academy for raising R6 000. The school received a 40-litre Defy chest freezer sponsored by PSFA.
- 3rd place – Wellington Primary for raising R5 000. The school received catering equipment for their kitchen sponsored by Plastics for Africa and Tierbos Gas.
WINNER – HELDERKRUIN PRIMARY
SECOND PLACE – FOREST VILLAGE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
THIRD PLACE – WELLINGTON PRIMARY
The runners up were:
2nd runner up – St Michael’s Primary School for raising R3 940
6th runner up – Saxonsea High School for raising R1 900.20
Each school will be presented with a certificate of our appreciation.
We are delighted to announce that these schools collectively managed to raise a fantastic total of R39 474.90. This amount will enable PSFA to provide 80 learners affected by poverty with daily nutritious breakfasts and lunches for an entire year.
PSFA would like to take this opportunity to thank all these schools for joining us in the battle against childhood hunger. We are truly grateful for your support!

The partnership between PSFA and the Livingstone- Kenilworth Table Tennis Club (Liv-Ken TTC) started in 2017 when the Club celebrated its 80th anniversary and presented PSFA with a donation in the amount of R28 000.00.
Hasie Ismail, the chairman at the time informed PSFA that he had set a fundraising target of R100 000.00 for Liv-Ken TTC to raise and donate to PSFA in 20 years’ time (2037) when the club turns 100 years old.
Well, we are delighted to inform you that Hasie, now the fundraising convenor for Liv-Ken TTC, managed to raise a fantastic total of R110 500.00 in a space of only five years. We commend Hasie who worked tirelessly for 5 years to raise and donate this money. What an absolute star! Hasie challenges all other sports clubs to do the same.
PSFA thanks everyone who donated to this initiative and Liv-Ken TTC for allowing Hasie to raise funds to feed hungry schoolchildren. May Liv-Ken TTC grow from strength to strength.

As most of you might know by now, due to this awful COVID-19 pandemic, PSFA had to unfortunately cancel our popular fundraising event Blisters for Bread during 2020 and then again this year. Our 53rd Blisters for Bread would have taken place this year on Sunday 29 August.
Blisters for Bread is a very important event for PSFA for the following reasons:
- It creates vital awareness of childhood hunger at schools hence keeping the work done by PSFA to address this challenge, in the hearts and minds of the South African community.
- Over 13 000 people walk every year – the event raises an average of R680 000.00 per annum through entry fees. 100% of this money is allocated to feeding hungry schoolchildren.
To commemorate Blisters for Bread, PSFA staff, representatives from our general committee and their families gathered together near the Mouille Point Lighthouse on Sunday 29 August at 9am, to walk from the lighthouse along the Sea Point Promenade to the Presidents Hotel and back again.
After completing the walk, each person was presented with a bag filled with goodies kindly sponsored by Good Hope International Beverages, Sneaker LAB and Outside the Bowl.
This activity was a great opportunity for the staff to have fun together and honour Blisters for Bread, a PSFA annual event that first took place in 1958.

In honour of Youth Day held on June 16, the staff at M-Kem 24 Hour Pharmacy in Bellville decided to knit scarves for schoolchildren affected by poverty who attend Parow Valley Primary School.
On Wednesday 18 August, staff members of M-KEM presented Mrs Marinda Carrol, the acting principal at Parow Valley Primary and a group of her colleagues with the colourful scarves lovingly knitted by the M-KEM staff. Mrs Carrol and her team will select the neediest children on PSFA’s feeding programme to each be given a scarf.
In addition to the scarves, M-KEM directors, Leigh Hershaw and Gill Watson presented our fundraising manager, Charles Grey with a cheque for PSFA in the amount of R16 000. This donation will enable PSFA to provide 32 hungry schoolchildren with daily breakfasts and lunches for a calendar year – for this, we are truly grateful!
Youth Day in South Africa is a day to honour the courage and sacrifice of the Soweto Uprising youth and celebrate all young people. Youth Day means acknowledging the sacrifices of the 1976 youth who fought for our freedom during the apartheid era and the improvement of our education system.
